Bridging
pop hooks and garage distortion with delicate vocal harmonies, Five Blank
Pages brings forth a medley of raw emotion and a spectrum of style on their
debut 6-song EP, Spaces to Occupy and Abandon. Recorded by Greg Dawson
(Moneen, The End, Mare), Spaces... is an infectious and heart-rending
introduction to this fast-rising Brampton, Ontario-based band. Reminiscent
of Pedro the Lion, Hayden, The Weakerthans, Elliott Smith, and mid-90s
east coast pop, Five Blank Pages are not easily pigeonholed like many new-rock
artists; their sound provides a new edge to indie-rock while remaining easily
accessible to a wider audience.
Formed in 2003, Five Blank Pages is the permanent outgrowth of singer-songwriter
Noyan Hilmis (vocals, guitars) solo project, noyz. Teamed with his girlfriend,
Pinar Özyetis, (vocals, bass, keyboards), and his sister, Chelen Hilmi
(drums, vocals), the trio bring together a generous range of song-style, warm
harmonies, brooding yet emotive chords, and lyrics that drip with honesty
at every softly uttered syllable. Five Blank Pages welcomed East-coaster Rajiv Thavanathan to join on bass in February 2006.
Since its inception, Five Blank Pages has garnered a following by frequently
playing popular and diverse venues in Toronto and Southern Ontario, including
showcases in Canadian Music Week 2003, 2005 & 2006, North By Northeast
2005, S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival 2005, and Edge 102s Steamwhistle
Indie Club, and sets in the Brampton Indie Arts Festival 2004 & 2006 and
Eric Warners Over the Top Festival 2004 & 2005.
While consistently playing shows across Ontario, Five Blank Pages released
Spaces... to retail stores on August 10, 2004 through Sonic Unyon
Distribution. A cross-Canada college/university radio mail-out followed,
prompting radio play, as well as chart success (at #140 on !earshot Dec. 2004).
Five Blank Pages have recently joined Sunday
League Records who will be releasing their next record.
